No, we have nothing against synthetic fibers. Quite the opposite. Nevertheless, we have relied on a natural material for decades: real goat hair. It is used in the brushes of our record washing machines as well as in our new Quick Care Brush for quick dry cleaning.
Why?
It's simple: Because goat hair has proven to be particularly gentle and at the same time extremely effective in numerous tests.
Why does the brush material even matter?
When cleaning a record, it's not about scrubbing as hard as possible. The decisive factor is rather to remove dirt from the fine grooves without damaging the sensitive vinyl surface.
This is where real goat hair shows its special properties.
Numerous tests with a clear result
During the development of our cleaning systems, different brush materials were compared.
Again and again, the same picture emerged: Brushes made of real goat hair achieved particularly convincing results in the fine record grooves.
They work particularly gently on the vinyl surface, penetrate deep into the grooves and reliably pick up loosened dirt particles.
For this reason, Knosti still uses only real goat hair brushes – a feature that distinguishes our cleaning systems from many other solutions on the market.
The ideal complement to ultrasonic cleaning
Even with the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic 2.0, the brushes play an important role.
The ultrasound loosens dirt particles from the fine grooves. The goat hair brushes then reliably pick up these loosened impurities and thus support the entire cleaning process.
In short:
Ultrasound loosens – goat hair picks up.
Precisely this combination ensures particularly thorough and at the same time gentle cleaning.
Why does the ultrasound keep turning off during cleaning?
Those using the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic 2.0 for the first time will immediately notice: The ultrasound doesn't run continuously but switches on and off repeatedly during the cleaning process.
Is this normal? Yes. This is exactly how it was designed.
Continuous operation is not always the best solution
Many assume that continuously operating ultrasound automatically cleans better. This seems logical at first – after all, more ultrasound should mean more cleaning power.
In practice, however, many more factors play a role.
Heat is generated during operation. If the ultrasound runs without interruption, the cleaning fluid gradually heats up. This is precisely what needs to be avoided when cleaning records.
Vinyl doesn't like high temperatures
Vinyl is a material that can be sensitive to heat. Even at temperatures around 35 °C, the risk of the material deforming increases. Therefore, the cleaning fluid should not heat up unnecessarily during the washing process.
For this reason, the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic 2.0 deliberately operates in interval mode. The ultrasound is switched on and off regularly so that the temperature of the cleaning fluid remains controlled.
Developed for a balanced cleaning result
Numerous test series were carried out during development. The goal was not to let the ultrasound run as long as possible, but to develop a cleaning system that reliably removes dirt while protecting the vinyl.
The interval operation is therefore not a compromise, but part of the overall concept.
Why does the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic work at 46 kHz – and not 80 or 120 kHz?
A question we hear again and again.
If you've ever looked into ultrasonic record cleaning machines, you might have noticed:
Many manufacturers advertise the highest possible ultrasonic frequencies.
60 kHz.
80 kHz.
120 kHz.
This suggests an assumption: the higher the number, the better the cleaning result.
However, it's not that simple.
The most important number is not the frequency.
What's important is the cleaning result.
When developing the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic, we therefore asked ourselves a different question:
How do we clean records as thoroughly as possible – without unnecessarily stressing the vinyl?
The answer is not "higher frequency", but the perfect interplay of all components.
Why exactly 46 kHz?
46 kHz has proven to be the optimal compromise in our development and long-term tests.
The ultrasonic waves reliably remove dirt from the fine grooves.
At the same time, the system works gently on materials and is safe for vinyl.
But for us, ultrasound is only one part of the whole.
Why does the ultrasonic always switch off?
We also get this question frequently.
The answer is simple: ultrasound generates heat.
If it were to run continuously, the cleaning fluid could continue to heat up.
However, vinyl reacts sensitively to temperatures around 35 °C.
That's why the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic deliberately operates in intermittent mode.
This keeps the temperature in the optimal range – and your records are cleaned particularly gently. This mode of operation is a conscious design decision and serves to protect the vinyl.
Why don't we only clean with ultrasound?
Because we are convinced that no single method alone delivers the best possible result.
That's why the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic combines three cleaning technologies:
• 46-kHz ultrasound, which loosens even fine dirt from the grooves.
• Specially developed goat hair brushes, which gently support the cleaning process.
• An antistatic cleaning fluid, which removes dirt and simultaneously reduces static charge.
Our conclusion
When it comes to ultrasonic record cleaning machines, it's not about the biggest possible number.
What matters is how all components work together.
That's precisely why the Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic was developed as a coordinated complete system.
